Goa Police Cup Review: Maiden attempt and first title
The FC Goa Development team, coached by Clifford Miranda, did remarkably well to win the Police Cup at the first attempt.
The prestigious tournament, Goa’s third-oldest, started in 1969, saw the Gaurs undertake their maiden journey in the tournament and win three matches en route to the title.
The injury-hit Dev Team started their campaign against Guardian Angels at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium, managing a 1-0 win.
After a cagey first half, the game exploded into life in the second half and it was new signing Christy Davis who bagged the match winner to send FC Goa into the semi-finals.
The semis was a rematch of the season-opening Charity friendly and the scoreline was identical this time around. Dempo were overcome 2-0 as Vincy Barretto and Lalnuntlunga scored in each half.
The final witnessed the Dev Team going up against Sporting Clube de Goa and Nestor Dias scored to give the Gaurs the lead. Sporting hit back to level as the Dev Team went down to 10 men.
In what was a tense shoot-out, Sporting missed their seventh kick as Ivon Costa converted for Miranda’s men to take the trophy home.
