FCG Recap (2017): Gaurs go top with 5-1 thrashing of Delhi Dynamos
Our FCG recap takes us down memory lane to a game that may very well have proven that FC Goa’s expansive style of football was really starting to bear fruit.
The 2017-18 season was one of tremendous performances, and beating the Delhi Dynamos in their own backyard was certainly one such moment.
Goals may have been predicted in this game much before this even started, with top strikers on both sides in the form of Kalu Uche for the Dynamos and Ferran Corominas for the Gaurs, but there was only one team in the mood to take their chances.
Coro gets the ball rolling
After a promising start, it appeared that the game would only burst into goalscoring life in the second half, but right at the end of the first period, Coro gave the Gaurs the advantage.
A free-kick from Manuel Lanzarote found its way to Coro after chaos in the box, and the Spaniard made no mistake, giving his side the lead.
Lanzarote doubles the pain
Moments after Coro opened the scoring, Lanzarote made it 2-0 after receiving the ball from the former.
A lovely curling effort with his left boot from the Spaniard resulted in the ball nestling in the top corner with the keeper watching helplessly. A marvellous goal from a marvellous player that put the Gaurs firmly in the driver’s seat.
Uche helps pull one back
The deficit was halved early in the second half as Delhi’s pressure finally led to a goal for the home side.
Kalu Uche fired the ball home after a cut back from Romeo Fernandes and gave the home fans some hope. Game on?
Horror moment for Pritam Kotal gives Gaurs the edge again
Despite scoring once, Delhi shot themselves in the foot as Gabriel Cichero was sent off for a second bookable offence, and their problems were compounded as they conceded a third goal via their own man.
A cross from Manuel Arana down the right was accidentally turned into his own net by Kotal, and his look soon after told the whole story.
Not quite the way Goa would have wanted to score, but no doubt they’ll take it. Game over.
Adrian Colunga scores on his debut
The Gaurs made it 4-1 at the death as a cross from Manuel Arana found Adrian Colunga Perez at the far post, and the Spaniard turned the ball home.
It was a dream debut for Adrian, and put the icing on the cake for FC Goa after a terrific performance.
Arana wraps it up at the end
There was still time for one last hurrah, and it came in the form of a deserved goal for Manuel Arana.
After Colunga’s initial effort was parried by the goalkeeper, Arana was on hand to pick up the scraps and smash the ball into the back of the net.
It was now 5-1 and if four was the icing, this was certainly the cherry on the top of a very good looking cake.
The commanding victory helped the Gaurs make it to the top of the ISL table, and helped cement them as one of the teams to beat as the season rolled into an important phase.
