FC Goa in crunch time: 3 times the Gaurs stepped up in deciders

FC Goa have their fate in their own hands as it comes down to crunch time in the Indian Super League (ISL).

The Gaurs are one of three teams in contention for the final playoff spot in the ISL this season, and know that just a point in their final league game of the campaign will be enough to secure a place in the semifinals.

Facing FC Goa are Hyderabad FC, who have to win to qualify for the semis, but will be wary of the threat of the Gaurs, who know how to deal with pressure very well.

Goa’s ability to win big matches is well known, and today we take a trip down memory lane to show you three matches where the Men in Orange stepped up when it mattered most:

Gaurs annihilate Jamshedpur 3-0 to enter playoffs (2018)

With the stakes high and a place in the playoffs up for grabs, FC Goa brushed aside the pre-match chatter as they demolished Jamshedpur FC 3-0 and eventually cruised into the last four that season.

The familiar face of Ferran Corominas was among the goal scorers on the night for the Gaurs, while fan favourite Manuel Lanzarote popped up with a goal as well in the second half.

The win was important in cementing Goa as serious contenders for the trophy, and a sign that this was a team that meant business.

FC Goa beat Chennaiyin FC 1-0 (2019)

It was Ferran Corominas once again who stepped up for FC Goa when they needed him most, as the Spaniard scored the solitary goal of a low-scoring yet comfortably victory for the Gaurs against Chennaiyin FC towards the end of the 2018-19 season.

The win was important more in terms of momentum more than anything else, but solidified this team as heavy favourites for the ISL trophy. As it turned out, the Gaurs reached the final before losing to Bengaluru FC that particular year.

Regardless, in league deciders, Goa did manage to push another gear up, and proved that in both the attacking third, as well as defensively, they can certainly do the business.

Gaurs clinch AFC Champions League place with 5-0 win over Jamshedpur FC (2020)

And we saved the best for last! Who can forget the incredible moment last season when FC Goa breezed past Jamshedpur FC to ensure they became the first ever Indian side to qualify for the group stages of the AFC Champions League.

With a monumental place up for grabs, the Gaurs came up with the goods, courtesy of goals from the irrepressible Coro, Hugo Boumous, Jackichand Singh and Mourtada Fall.

Celebrations followed soon after, and the moment was well deserved for a team that looked unstoppable at the time.

A year on, the Gaurs are once again in pole position to make it through to the playoffs, and will look to this particular game as motivation as they take the field against Hyderabad FC.
