ISL 2019/20, FC Goa vs ATK: 10 things you need to know about the game

FC Goa started December on a positive note. After snatching away a point from the jaws of defeat against Kerala Blasters, last Sunday saw Sergio Lobera’s men go back to winning ways thanks to a Manvir Singh winner against Hyderabad FC.

The men in Orange now are set to square off against ATK in a top-of-the-table clash with only two points separating the two sides.

Here are 10 numbers that you keep in mind ahead of what promises to be an enthralling encounter:

0 – No goals were scored in regulation time in the semi-final between ATK and FC Goa in the inaugural season of the ISL. It is the only time in the history of the ISL that such an occurrence took place. The tie was decided on penalties.

1 – ATK has managed to score more than 2 goals against FC Goa only once. The 2015 season saw Antonio Habas’ side run out 4-0 winners at their home, thanks to strikes from Sameegh Doutie (2), Iain Hume and Borja Fernandez.

2 – The game will see the return of two former FC Goa players back to their former stomping ground. Pronay Halder spent two seasons in the colours of the Super Cup champions whilst Prabir Das was part of the FC Goa squad in the inaugural season of the ISL.

5 – FC Goa are on a current unbeaten run of 5 games against ATK. The Gaurs beat the team from Kolkata 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season whilst a hard-fought battle at the Salt Lake Stadium saw the teams come away with a share of the spoils.

The last time ATK got the better of Goa was back on 24th November 2016, when strikes from Juan Belencoso and Stephen Pearson helped ATK to a 2-1 win in Goa.

6 – ATK have been on a tear off late. Following an opening day loss to Kerala, Antonio Habas’ men have bounced back in style, going unbeaten for the last 6 games, winning 4 of the encounters.

9 – FC Goa had failed to register a victory against ATK in their first 9 tries. The Gaurs’ first victory against the two-time champions came on 28th February, 2018 when they romped home to a 5-1 victory, led by a brace from Manuel Lanzarote.

12 – After his assist against Hyderabad, Brandon Fernandes is currently in pole position on the table for Indians with the highest number of assists in the Indian Super League.

13 – The teams have clashed 13 times in the past with FC Goa winning 3 encounters with ATK coming out on top on 4 occasions. 6 of the games have ended in a stalemate.

15 – A large part of the success that ATK has enjoyed this season is due to their devastating attack. Sitting top of the table at the time of writing, the team from the City of Joy has managed to ruffle the oppositions’ net 15 times in 7 games – the highest for any side in the ISL. ATK has never finished an ISL campaign as the highest scorers in the league.

17 – FC Goa have scored a combined 17 goals against ATK with 11 being scored in the last 4 games the two teams have met.
