Jay Gupta exudes confidence ahead of FC Goa’s clash with Kerala Blasters
As FC Goa return from the international break and gear up for their pivotal Indian Super League (ISL) clash against Kerala Blasters, defender Jay Gupta’s words from the pre-match press conference have set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
Currently sitting fifth on the table with 12 points from eight matches, the Gaurs are looking to maintain momentum and solidify their position among the league’s top contenders.
Gupta started off by highlighting the increased competitiveness in the ISL this season, noting that teams are better prepared and equipped than ever before. “The competition in the ISL as a whole, I feel, is a lot more this season. All teams have better players and are much more prepared this time. Several teams are competing strongly for the top positions on the table now,” he said.
Despite facing reduced playing time this season due to stiff competition within the Goa squad, the defender remains optimistic about his growth and development. With the likes of Sandesh Jhingan, Nim Dorjee, Odei Onaindia, Aakash Sangwan and Sanatomba Singh also competing for spots across the Gaurs’ back-four, the 23-year-old views the challenge as a stepping stone to greater heights.
“I feel very confident in my capabilities, and the competition just helps me grow. It’s a very good opportunity to reach higher levels in terms of quality and ability. If someone puts me out of my place in the playing XI, that’s even better because I’ll keep on fighting to earn my spot back.”
He also sees this season as an invaluable learning experience. “Sometimes, one has to take a step back to push even further. If a player is not being picked to start, maybe there’s something they need to learn. In my case, that’s what I’m trying to pick up on – to get better as a player because my aim is not just to be a starter. I want to do much more for my Club and Country.”
Focused on the task ahead
FC Goa is determined to make a strong return after the international break, and the upcoming match against Kerala Blasters presents the perfect opportunity.
Jay Gupta emphasized the team’s readiness, saying, “We’ve been training really well, and everybody’s focused on their tasks. We’re gearing up to go there and grind together to get the win.”
Playing in Kochi, renowned for its electrifying atmosphere set by Kerala Blasters’ passionate fans, doesn’t faze the youngster. “I don’t know why people call it pressure. We love playing in front of crowds. One thing we think about is the weather – it’s pretty humid out there – but we’re lucky to train under similar conditions here in Goa. It’s a privilege to play in front of such an audience, and if we’re able to come back with a good result, we’ll be really happy,” he remarked.
The Indian international also shared insights into the team’s preparations following the international window break, which provided an opportunity to regroup and address minor lapses from earlier in the season. “The coaching staff has made sure to keep us in check, even when we were away. Now we’re back again and ready to go to Kerala with a healthy squad to perform at our best.
“We want to start right from where we left off, with a win again,” Gupta signed off.
