Hindsight: Saviour Gama comes through yet again in crunch time for the Gaurs

The big games seem to be a time that gets the best out of Saviour Gama. The left-back first burst onto the screen with his performance in the ISL final in 2019 – having come on as a substitute then after former captain Mandar Rao Dessai went down with an injury.

A year later, he followed that up by scoring FC Goa’s solitary goal against Chennaiyin in the first leg of the semis last season. He again came to the fore on Friday night with a goal that embodied the sense of adventure that is omnipresent in the Goa backline.

Speaking to fcgoa.in after another eye-catching performance against Mumbai, Gama explained the mentality of the team and himself heading into the game, the emotions after the goal and the challenge of the second leg with the tie standing on a knife’s edge.

“I think we played the best match of the season yesterday. I am very proud of my team,” exclaimed the left-back. “A few things that happened on the pitch were confusing and we were sadly on the sharp end of the stick. On the things that were within our control, I think we have to be better in our defensive third and keep better concentration throughout the ninety minutes.”

Even with a number of key players missing, the Gaurs still stuck to their philosophy. A free-spirited display saw Juan Ferrando’s men take the lead twice before being pulled back on as many occasions.

“Coach told me and the others to enjoy the game. He told me not to be afraid to go forward and forget any stress or tension I might have heading into the game,” added Gama.

“Scoring in big games is something any player would want. I’m very happy to have scored yet again in the semi-final. Though the most crucial thing is winning them and that’s what we aim to do.”

And the youngster understands that this is not going to be an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. However, he has full faith in the team which now is on a 14-game unbeaten streak.

“The 2nd leg is going to be difficult. Mumbai is a good side. And then we have a lot of players who are injured,” opined the 23-year-old. “However, I feel we have our destiny in our hands. We have one plus point. Every player in the team is very strong mentally, and this gives character to our team. So we will go out strong and look for the win.”

To round off the conversation, the former Developmental Team stalwart dedicated his strike to a very special person in his life.

“I would like to dedicate the goal to my girlfriend. She has always supported me in my worst days. I’m very lucky to have her in my life. And I praise God for everything he has given me,” signed off Gama.

With the tie hanging in a fine balance, FC Goa play the return leg of the semi-finals against Mumbai City FC on 8th March. The game at GMC Stadium, Bambolim is slated for a 7:30 PM kickoff.
