GFA Vedanta Women’s League 2021: Kimberly Fernandez confident of clinching the trophy
FC Goa finished the first leg of the 2021 GFA Vedanta Women’s League in second place, trailing leaders Sirvodem Sports Club only on goal difference. After three wins and a draw from their opening four games, the girls are in a buoyant mood especially following a 7-0 win over Goa United Sports Academy on Sunday. However, they are fully aware that a tough second leg awaits them as they look to clinch the club’s first-ever crown in women’s competition.
This year, the Gaurs recruited from all over Goa with only Kimberly Fernandez being the exception. Whilst her roots are from Goa, the central defender made her name in the colours of Bodyline FC in Mumbai. She brings with her a wealth of experience, having played the Indian Women’s League already and sounded confident of leading the Gaurs to the big league and winning the title in her first season with the Gaurs.
“It has been a really positive experience so far with the team. We have had a good campaign and the mood in the camp is really optimistic,” remarked Kimberly.
“We have not only been winning, but also have been able to play the style of football the coach has been demanding from us. This is very different from the normal 4-4-2 that we are so used to in women’s football.
“That was going to be a challenge right from the get-go and we are all pleased that we have been able to execute what we set out to do in practice.
“It was a big change for me coming from Mumbai and playing in the Goa league. I am extremely happy that I was able to acclimate quickly and match up to the standards here.
Unbeaten so far in the league, the experienced defender has played a crucial role in helping the team defensively whilst also playing a critical role in the build up to the goals.
In her first season in Goa, the defender further added to the seachange in attitude playing at FC Goa.
“I am pleasantly surprised by the commitment of the club to the program. We have four coaches, a physiotherapist and a manager. Everything at the club is detailed out. This is the kind of professional attitude that we all crave for,” added Kimberly.
“The set up is professional and I am delighted at having taken the decision to join FC Goa. The games have been tough and the one game against Sirvodem was especially tasking. However, we rose to the challenge and got ourselves a vital point. I believe we will do so again when the time comes and prove that we are the best team in the league.”
