ISL 2021/22: Mumbai City FC vs. FC Goa: 3 Gaurs to watch out for

FC Goa start off their 2020/21 campaign with a sense of familiarity – both in terms of their squad and the team that they face for their opener. Eight months earlier, it was heartbreak for the Gaurs as it took Mumbai City sudden death in the penalties to knock them out of the competition.

A year wiser under Juan Ferrando and with a successful Durand Cup campaign under their bags, FC Goa will not look to overcome the Blues – quite literally when they take to the field on Monday.

Here are three players who can make that job easier:

#1 Airam Cabrera

Past performances from the FC Goa frontmen have led to the fact that the eyes of the Gaurs’ faithful will be firmly fixed on the Spaniard. A new signing is always greeted with bated breaths and anticipation. But, when you lead the line for the  Gaurs, the sense of expectation seems to increase multiple times.

Over the last four seasons, the ISL Golden Boot has become the property of an FC Goa forward three times with injuries arguably keeping Coro away from bagging it in 2019/20.

Igor Angulo went on to capture the crown last season and now it’s Airam Cabrera’s turn to be thrust on the main stage. If the Spaniard can be at his best in the opener, it will certainly make things easier for Juan Ferrando and his men.

#2 Alexander Romario Jesuraj

The winger has been a vital part of the cog for Juan Ferrando during his time as the FC Goa head coach. The man from Dindigul is a tireless workhorse on the wings with the ability to find his man in the middle.

His first season in the Hero Indian Super League in FC Goa colours saw him end on 4 assists and a goal to his name. However, his impact goes way beyond just these numbers as he provides the Gaurs with a real zeal on the wings which helps them not only in their build-up, but also whilst covering their tracks when without the ball.

It feels like the grit is a given thing whenever Romario steps onto the pitch. If he is able to deliver quality in the final third when going forward, it should be a good day in the park for FC Goa.

#3 Glan Martins

Glan Martins’ presence in the middle of the park lights things up for FC Goa, especially when not in possession of the ball. His grit and tenacity in the middle of the park lend a whole different dynamic to the Gaurs’ gameplay.

Over the last half of last season, Glan was arguably one of the most influential players in the league with his ability to disrupt the opponent’s plans giving the Gaurs a real upper hand in the proceedings.  A leader in the pressing game, Glan’s energy will be vital for FC Goa to win the midfield battles time and again.
