FCG Recap (2018): Coro, Edu guide Gaurs to 2-1 win over Kerala Blasters

Our FCG recap takes us back to January 2018, to a time when FC Goa were looking like genuine contenders for the Indian Super League (ISL) crown, and Kerala Blasters were trying their best to make it into the playoffs.

That set up a mouth watering tie between the two ISL heavyweights, but it was the Gaurs who came up trumps. Here is how it went down.

Coro strikes early

Goa’s hopes were undoubtedly on Ferran Corominas to once again deliver, and he did not let the visiting fans down, as he struck within the first ten minutes.

A cut back from Mandar Rao Dessai found Coro on the edge of the box, and the Spaniard controlled the ball before firing it past the goalkeeper to give the Gaurs an early lead.

CK Vineeth grabs the equaliser

Goa looked in control, but buoyed by the home fans’ support, Kerala Blasters hit back just before the half hour mark thanks to CK Vineeth.

Vineeth’s side footed effort proved too much for Laximant Kattimani to deal with in the Goa goal, and the ball flew into the top corner to make it 1-1.

Gaurs have the chances

Despite the equaliser for Kerala, it was FC Goa who controlled much of the game, with the likes of Edu Bedia and Mandar Rao Dessai having chances to score.

With the game edging towards the end, was there still time for the visitors to grab a goal?

Edu does the business

Just when it seemed like the game might fizzle out into a draw, Edu was the man who stepped up and grabbed the winner.

With just over ten minutes of the game left, the Spaniard was able to get his head on a corner taken by Brandon Fernandes, and guide it past the keeper into the far corner.

The celebrations said it all, and the scoreline was finally in favour of the Gaurs once more.

A hard fought win in Kochi

Despite some late chances, Kerala were unable to grab a second equaliser, and the Gaurs managed to see out the game and take home all three points.

The victory confirmed Goa as one of the teams to beat in the ISL, and took them one step closer to the playoffs.
