FCG Recap (2015): FC Goa come from behind to beat NorthEast United 3-1

Today’s FCG Recap is all about retro hour, as we head back to the second season of the Indian Super League (ISL) and bring you a game which solidified the Gaurs as a force in Indian football.

The game is against NorthEast United FC away from home, and playing in Guwahati at that time especially, was no easy task.

With a partisan crowd, the Gaurs came up trumps, and here’s how they managed it:

Pegged back early

FC Goa would have preferred a strong start to the game, but the exact took place, as NorthEast struck within the first fifteen minutes of the match.

Francis Dadzie was the man who put the Highlanders in the lead, connecting with a solid header after a cross was played into the box.

1-0 to the home side and the pressure on the Gaurs.

The comeback begins

FC Goa aren’t a team to give in so easily, and just before the half hour mark, the visitors were level.

Jonatan Lucca was the scorer after a lovely curling effort from the edge of the box that found its way into the bottom corner. 1-1 and game on.

Ahead in no time

Soon after Lucca brought the Gaurs back into the game, Reinaldo made sure the team in blue went ahead.

Latching onto a deflection, the Brazilian managed to slide in and right foot the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-1 and give the visiting fans something big to cheer about.

Mandar’s time to shine

A masterstroke from FC Goa boss Zico saw Mandar Rao Dessai brought onto the pitch in the second half, and it worked wonders.

Less than five minutes after coming on, the Goan latched on to a through ball from Leo Moura and smashed the ball through the legs of the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 and settle the score once and for all.

Big win for the Gaurs

It looked a tough ask from the get-go, but the grit and determination of FC Goa enabled the team to secure a big victory in the end.

The game proved huge for the career of Mandar Rao Dessai, who went to captain the Gaurs to many a success later on, but more importantly, helped the entire FC Goa side gain the confidence to win more big matches in the league.
