FC Goa vs Bengaluru FC: 3 Gaurs to watch out for

FC Goa start their defence of the ISL League Winners’ Shield at the Fatorda Stadium on Sunday when they take on arch-rivals Bengaluru FC to begin the Juan Ferrando era.

Since Bengaluru FC’s introduction to the ISL in 2017, the two sides have been the only ones to have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. And no one would expect anything less than the usual fireworks that these two sides produce whenever these two teams meet.

Past encounters between the two have been close but never boring, and we can be assured of the same as the two teams would like to start the new season with a good performance and continue the momentum into the season.

Plenty of new faces promise new flavours in the match and we can’t wait for it to start. Here are the three Gaurs who can help us secure all 3 points

#1 Edu Bedia

Edu Bedia FC Goa

Having spent the beginning of last season on the sidelines owing to injury Edu Bedia will be raring to go and produce some fireworks to announce the start of a new season as Captain.

The Spaniard forms a crucial part of FC Goa’s transition from defence to attack and vice versa. Possessing the ability to play anywhere in midfield, the Spaniard has time and again showed his versatility.

In his first season at the club, he was playing as a part of the double pivot before moving on to a more advanced role in the 2018/19 season – shining in both the roles.

Against Bengaluru, his experience and guile could be the key to unlock the Blues’ defence while being vital to the team’s fortunes.

#2 Sanson Pereira

Sanson Pereira can be the reason for a smile on every Goan’s face during the match on Sunday. The youngster is likely to make his ISL debut in Sunday’s game with Saviour Gama unavailable due to suspension.

Possessing a calm head, a good first touch and a spirit for adventure, the left-back should add even more flair on the left flank whilst on the attack. His task will be cut out though while tracking back. Up against some of the best attacking players in the league. With the primary focus on keeping a clean sheet don’t be surprised if he has an assist to his name

#3 Igor Angulo

No Team has scored more goals in the ISL than FC Goa since the inception of ISL. Being the only team to score more than 200 goals in six seasons of the league, everyone would look to the Gaurs as to whether they can continue on their goalscoring run under new head coach Juan Ferrando.

This season will see experienced Spanish marksman Igor Angulo lead the charge at the front for the Gaurs.

Angulo is a legend in Poland. The experienced striker has spent the past 4 seasons in Poland with Gornik Zabrze, where he has been amongst the top 2 goal-scorers in the Polish Ekstraklasa for three consecutive seasons, winning the Golden Boot in the 2018/19 season thanks to his 24 strikes.

The Bilbao native has scored a total of  88 goals in 154 games during his time in Poland. He has also notched up a further 21 assists to take his total goal contributions’ tally up to 109 over the four years spent with the record 14-time Polish Champions.

The forward led the charge in  Górnik Zabrze’s promotion to the Polish first division in his first season at the club and has since helped establish them as a regular in the Ekstraklasa whilst also helping them qualify for Europe.

He was the club’s highest goalscorer in each of the seasons he was there. And understandably a lot of eyes will be focussed on the man hailing from the Basque region in Spain.
