AFC Champions League, 2020/21, Persepolis vs FC Goa: 3 Gaurs to watch out for

FC Goa will step out on to the pitch at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa tonight with a sense that history beckons them once again. Juan Ferrando’s men have more than given a good account of themselves in the tournament. The two draws in their opening games against Al Rayyan and Al Wahda says has clearly sent a message – this team is no pushover, even at the biggest stage in continental football.

And now comes Persepolis. The group leaders have had much joy in their two opening games, securing maximum points from their opening encounters. However, they know full well that they will have to be at their sharpest to unruffle the feathers of a defiant FC Goa side.

Ahead of tonight’s game, we look at some of the key players in the FC Goa rank who could help the Gaurs script another memorable in the AFC Champions League:

#1 Sanson Pereira

The young left-back has arguably been the least talked about player in the FC Goa ranks. After starting only one game in the Indian Super League, Sanson has grabbed the gift of a start with open hands.

The 23-year-old has done tremendously well – giving the FC Goa backline a sturdy presence on the left flank while at the same time producing quality overlapping runs to always help out while moving forward.

Like all others, Sanson will have to be at his best as they take on the champions of Iran.

#2 Dheeraj Singh

Dheeraj Singh has catapulted back into the spotlight with a couple of impressive outings in the AFC Champions League. The young 20-year-old seems to have his mojo back, helping the Gaurs to keep a clean sheet in the opening two games of the competition.

The young man from Manipur has been able to keep his composure and deliver time and again – even in moments which seemed beyond hope to claw the Gaurs back into the contest.

Up against the group leaders Persepolis, the keeper will again have to be at his best if FC Goa are to get a positive result.

#3 Jorge Ortiz

One might be forgiven to say that Jorge Ortiz had an off day last time around. However, he remains pivotal to the blueprint Juan Ferrando has laid out for his side against Persepolis.

The fleet-footed Spaniard has time and again served as an outlet for the Gaurs whenever they have looked to break on the counter. However, he has never been a luxury for the team as one finds him time and again in his own half in this competition, helping the defence out with his constant running and cutting off of passing lanes.

The Gaurs faithful will again have their eyes pinned on him in the hope of providing the side with a creative spark.
