Hero Elite League 2019/20: FC Goa goes down to Salgaocar 0-1

FC Goa fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Salgaocar in the Hero Elite League at Nagoa today in a Goa Group stage game of the tournament.

A 52nd minute strike from Salgaocar’s Mark Carvalho was enough to give them the win.

The young Gaurs, with Joybert Almeida leading the line got off to a brisk start as they looked to get forward at every possible instance, and the likes of Joybert, Mevan Dias and Meuton Fernandes looking dangerous.

The big chances of the first half all belonged to FC Goa, and in particular Mevan Dias. The youngster mustered up three good goal scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.

Once the second half began, Salgaocar grew into the game, and got their goal in the 52nd minute when Mark Carvalho bagged the opener against the run of play.

FC Goa pushed forward in the hope of an equaliser but several strategic stops in play halted their momentum every step of the way.

A couple of substitutions did make a difference and towards the end, the Gaurs had a few chances to find a leveler.

Meuton looked the most threatening FC Goa player on the pitch, and he came close to finding a deserved goal, only to see his effort fly over the bar in second half stoppage time.

Another late opportunity fell to Rayan Menezes, but his header came off the crossbar, leaving the young Gaurs disheartened.

As the final whistle blew, there can be no doubt that FC Goa can consider themselves unlucky not to get anything out of the game, but their performance on the day certainly bodes well for future matches.

The loss; the Gaurs’ first of the season sees them placed 2nd in the group with 6 points from their 3 games – 1 point behind Dempo with a game in hand. The youngsters will be back in action in the tournament on 17th January when they take on SESA at the Nagoa Football Ground. The game is scheduled for a 3:45 pm kickoff.
