Hero Elite League: FC Goa beat Salgaocar 3-1 after second half blitz

FC Goa produced a sublime second half display to beat Salgaocar 3-1 despite going down to nine men at Ella ground in the Hero Elite League.

FC Goa began the game as if they meant business, and controlled possession while looking fairly comfortable on the ball.

A few warning shots were fired on the Salgaocar goal before the likes of Joybert Almeida, Vasim Inamdar and Brison Fernandes combined to create more chances for the Gaurs.

The best chance of the first half fell to Vasim, who made a terrific mazing run into the box, and after some slick passing, was found in front of goal.

His shot however, smashed the crossbar instead of rippling the net, and Salgaocar survived.

FC Goa goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari was also fairly busy in the first period, but handled every strike expertly to deny the Salgaocar attack.

Deeshank Kunkalikar had a glorious opportunity towards the end of the first half to make it 1-0, but his shot was hit straight at the goalkeeper.

The scoreline read 0-0 at the break, and both sides were realistically in with a shout to win it.

The game sprung into life in the second half, and it was FC Goa who took the lead after the referee pointed to the spot for handball.

Vasim stepped up and coolly converted the pen, making it 1-0 to the Gaurs and boosting the confidence of those in orange.

1-0 became 2-0 a minute later after the Gaur teens put together a sensational spell of passing that left Salgaocar in splits.

After some lovely interplay, it was Brison who managed to beat the keeper, and the boys celebrated the goal just as enthusiastically as they scored it.

The breathing space allowed the youngsters to take a step back, but tempers flared in the 71st minute when Velroy Fernandes got into an altercation with the opposition.

The referee showed a red card to Velroy for dissent, but it didn’t faze the team as they pushed forward and found a third thanks to Brison once more.

This time, an emphatic strike into the top corner sealed the deal, and ensured that FC Goa take home a healthy victory against a very good Salgaocar team.

Towards the end, a contentious decision gave Salgaocar a consolation goal as the ball appeared to be cleared off the line, but the referee bizarrely gave a goal instead, causing outrage among the FC Goa players.

Nonetheless, the goal stood, and Salgaocar were awarded a penalty soon after, but the kick was missed after it hit the post.

A moment of madness from goalkeeper Hritik led to him being sent off in the dying moments of the game, and the Gaurs ended with nine on the pitch, finally able to see out the match and take home a 3-1 victory.
