Goa Pro League 2021: FC Goa held to a draw by Guardian Angel SC

The FC Goa Developmental Team was held to their third consecutive draw in the campaign by Guardian Angel Sports Club tonight here at Duler Stadium in Goa. The Developmental Team thought they had secured all three points in the 69th minute of the contest when a well-worked move helped Joybert Almedia to yet another goal.

Guardian Angel would though make a late comeback thanks to a wonder strike from Joel Barreto in the 87th minute, giving a tough lesson to Deggie Cardozo’s boys for not making the most of their domination in the game.

A pattern emerged very early minutes of the contest with FC Goa dominating possession while Guardian Angel looked to play on the counter-attack.

FC Goa in fact nearly made their assertiveness in the proceedings count after only 11 minutes. It was then that the young Gaurs were awarded a penalty after Pratheesh V. Vitteel in the Guardian Angel goal was deemed to have fouled the onrushing Brison Fernandes’ attempt on goal.

A minute later, Aaren D’Silva, FC Goa’s highest scorer in the league last season stepped up but failed to convert from the spot thanks to a brilliant diving save from the keeper to redeem himself.

Deggie Cardozo would be given another jolt in the next few minutes with injury cutting short Aaren D’Silva’s come back to the starting line within the opening half an hour.

Guardian Angel created their first big opportunity in the 30th minute when good work from Beneston Barretto on the right helped him create some space and deliver a dangerous low cross. Thankfully, for FC Goa, Brian Faria was there to mop up thanks to a clearance on the slide.

Joybert Almeida, who had replaced Aaren D’Silva and Jovial Dias had half-chances towards the end of the first half for FC Goa and Guardian Angel respectively, but neither could produce the telling touch.

The young Gaurs continued to dazzle in the second half with Brison Fernandes and Velroy Fernandes getting in behind the Angel’s backline thanks to some nifty passing and movement. Their finishing though didn’t match the quality of the build-up play, leaving the score still stuck at 0-0.

That was till the 69th minute.

Good play in the middle from first Delton Colaco and then Christy Davis helped find Velroy Fernandes in space on the right. The midfielder’s delivery into the box was low, hard and had enough curl to evade the defenders and yet find Joybert Almeida on the run. Joybert gleefully accepted the gift to put the Gaurs ahead in the 69th minute from point black range.

FC Goa got a golden opportunity to put the game to bed in the 80th minute. Ivon Costa, who had shifted to left-back by this time, spotted Christy Davis making a purposeful diagonal run, unmarked. Costa’s ball over the top was neatly brought down by Davis, but the midfielder snatched at the opportunity with his weaker left foot, causing the shot to go wide.

The indecisive touches in the opposition penalty box by the young Gaurs would be punished in the 87th minute by a wonder strike by Joel Barreto. Cutting in from the left after an initial miscue, Barreto eked out space for a shot from an acute angle before delivering a curling effort that sailed over Dylan D’Silva in the FC Goa goal and nestled into the net near the far post.

The strike brought about an urgency in the FC Goa ranks and they nearly clinched all three points in the 94th minute. Good movement and passing helped Delton Colaco find space on the left edge of the penalty box. However, his powerful strike sailed over the crossbar before the game was brought to an end seconds later.

The draw, FC Goa’s third in a row, means that the Gaurs move to 15 points from their 9 games thanks to 4 wins and 3 draws. The young Gaurs will be back in action on March 31, Wednesday when they take on SESA Football Academy at the Duler Stadium. That game is slated for a 4:15 pm kickoff.
