Goa Pro League 2021: FC Goa Dev Team move up to second place after 2-1 win over Dempo SC

The FC Goa Developmental team recorded their second win in a row to grab the second spot on the Goa Professional League table. Goals from Vasim Inamdar and HP Lalremruata on either side of halftime were enough to help the young Gaurs secure a 2-1 win over Dempo SC.

With forward Aaren D’Silva missing due to injury, Deggie Cardozo named two changes to the side that overcame Calangute Association in their last game.  Young Delton Colaco and Kapil Hoble came into the side while Velroy Fernandes made way along with Aaren.

A fast-paced beginning to the game offered little in terms of goalscoring opportunities for either side. The only moment in the opening half an hour which threatened of trouble the scorer came in the 12th minute when Brison Fernandes struck a volley from 30 odd yards out.

The midfielder’s shot beat the keeper all ends but rattled off of the crossbar. Whilst the young Gaurs enjoyed more possession in the opening minutes, the attacks were not piercing enough to trouble the Dempo backline.

Deggie Cardozo’s boys got into their groove following the water break at the 30-minute mark. And it looked like Sarineo Fernandes would give himself a birthday gift to remember when he went marauding down the left in the 36th minute. The youngster’s shot though didn’t match his build-up as he blazed over from close range.

Sarineo turned provider a few minutes later as another trademark run of his in the 42nd minute found him putting in a delectable ball into the box at the end of it. The cross was met by an onrushing Vasim Inamdar, but the forward failed to keep his header on target.

Inamdar made up for his miss a minute later as the Gaurs pressed on the accelerator. Melroy Fernandes did well to stave off a shot from distance from the boots of HP Lalremruata but on the follow-up, Inamdar beat his man before blazing home from close range to put the young Gaurs ahead.

Dempo had a golden opportunity to equalise in the first minute of added-on time. However, Richard Cardoz failed to find the target from six yards out, meaning that Cardozo and his boys went into the dressing room at half time with their lead intact.

Vasim Inamdar was at it again following the break. It has his running and tenacity that helped the Gaurs retrieve the ball inside the Dempo box in the 63rd minute. The forward then showed calmness to find the onrushing Lalremruata, whose first-time finish helped the Gaurs double the lead.

Dempo, though, would make a mark in the game five minutes later. Darell Mascarenhas cut in from the left before curling one superb effort past the outstretched hands of Dylan D’Silva in the FC Goa goal and into the top corner.

The Golden Eagles threw the kitchen sink at the young Gaurs in the final minutes, but FC Goa showed enough fortitude to eke out all three points.

The win means that the young Gaurs jump five places and are now second on the table with 6 points from 2 games, three behind league leaders Salgaocar. The Developmental team will next take on Velsao SCC on February 19. That game is slated for a 3:45 pm kickoff.
