Hero Super Cup 2019: FC Goa seal berth in final

FC Goa booked its place in the final of the Hero Super Cup after beating I-League champions Chennai City FC 3-0 in the semi-final here at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. It was a near-complete performance from the Gaurs as they controlled the tempo of the game from the get go and ended the game with 19 attempts on goal.

Coro’s brace in the first half helped Goa take a 2-0 lead into halftime while Brandon Fernandes put the icing on the cake with a composed finished in the second half.

Brilliant movement and passing from the Gaurs saw them slicing through the Chennai City defence at will time and again in the early goings with Jackichand Singh looking particularly threatening on the right wing.

And it was no surprise that the first clear cut opportunity came via the man from Manipur. The winger was found by a brilliant ball by Hugo Boumous in the 20th minute. In turn, Jacki was able to find the onrushing Zaid Krouch in the box. The Moroccan, however, wasn’t able to keep his shot down.

Finally, the breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Coro was hacked down by a reckless challenge in the box by Charles. The Spaniard stepped up himself to slot the ball past the diving Mauro Boerchio courtesy of a Panenka right down the middle of the goal.

10 minutes later it was 2-0, again thanks to Coro. The Spaniard started the move as he played in Jacki on the right edge of the box before getting into the box to get to the end of the Manipuri’s ball into the box. The Spaniard’s assured touches helped him make room before he shot it low and into the bottom corner of the net - this time on his weaker left foot.

The first big moment of the second half came in the 54th minute when Boumous was able to find Jacki with an inch-perfect through ball. The Indian international, though, instead of bearing down on goal decided to play in Coro on the left. Whilst the idea was good, the ball was a tad bit ahead of Coro and the Spaniard failed to make a telling contact with the ball.

Chennai’s first and only big moment came in the 66th minute of the game when Alexander Romario Jesuraj went on a blazing run before taking a shot on his left that rattled the crossbar.

Goa sealed the game in the only way they know - scoring a goal to be remembered in the 69th minute of the game. Boumous put in a Marseille turn in the middle of the pitch to escape his marker before playing in Brandon Fernandes on his left - beyond the Chennai defence. The winger went rampaging on goal before pulling in a hesitation move to get past his defender and slotting the ball past the onrushing keeper.

With Chennai looking for a goal late on, the Gaurs had a number of opportunities to make the victory even bigger. However, a lack of composure meant that the game ended 3-0.

Goa now awaits the winner of the game between ATK and Chennaiyin FC to know who they will play in the final. The final is slated for 8:30 pm kickoff at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on April 13.
