Hero Junior League 2019/20: FC Goa go down to Salgaocar despite a spirited display

FC Goa finished on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline today at Nagoa as they went down to Salgaocar FC in a Hero Junior League game.

The defeat means FC Goa remains in 3rd spot in the Goa group of the Hero Junior League. For Salgaocar this was their 4th victory in 5 games, seeing them top the group.

Head coach Prestley Pereira put out a 4-2-3-1 formation for the game with an aim to score goals, but the young Gaurs had to be solid in their defensive third rather than the attacking one for most of the first half.

Micky Dias in the FC Goa goal was called into action a few times in the first 45 minutes, but made a couple of fine saves as the attacking players played largely on the counter.

The best chance of the half for the young Gaurs fell to Bryson Pereira but he could only sky his effort after a defensive lapse saw him through on goal.

That was about the best the youngsters could muster up in front of goal in the first half, as Salgaocar pushed forward and should have been ahead at the break, but were unable to convert any of their free shots at goal.

After having gone into halftime scoreless, the young Gaurs brightened up their display at the beginning of the second forty-five – coming back onto the pitch with a renewed spirit.

Salgeo Inacia Dias looked the most threatening for FC Goa in the second period as they pushed forward for the first goal of the game, but in doing so, left themselves slightly open at the back.

Despite dominating, the young Gaurs saw Salgaocar take the lead in the 70th minute of the match when Sidney Joel Gauncar found space inside the FC Goa penalty area and struck the ball past Micky Dias.

It got worse for FC Goa towards the end as Jordan Borges made it 2-0 to Salgaocar in the 89th minute.

FC Goa will be back in action in the Hero Junior on 20th January when they take on Churchill Brothers at the Rosary Church Ground, Navelim. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 pm kick-off.
