ISL Playoffs 2021, Semi-final leg 1: FC Goa vs. Mumbai FC, 3 Gaurs to watch out for

FC Goa’s insatiable appetite for success has yet again come to the fore as the Gaurs secured their place in the ISL playoffs for the fourth season running and six times in total – both league records.

And now they will look to march even further ahead as a place in the ISL final beckons yet again. With a lot at stake, it promises to be a pulsating encounter between the Gaurs and the Islander. So who can tilt the tide in FC Goa’s favour as they take on league champions Mumbai City FC on Friday night? Here are our picks!

#1 Jorge Ortiz

With Alberto Noguera missing the opening 90 minutes in FC Goa’s semi-final clash against Mumbai, the onus will be on Jorge Ortiz to provide the Gaurs with some creative juice in the final third. The Spaniard has been utilised all across the forward line by Juan Ferrando during the season and it will certainly be interesting to see where he is utilised on Friday night.

Ortiz can pop on the left or right to give the Mumbai wingbacks a real cause for concern whenever he is on the ball. The fleet-footed winger-cum-forward also can play as a number 10 utilising his pace and quick change in directions to give Goa a real impetus going forward.

#2 Redeem Tlang

After a slow start to the season, the winger from Meghalaya has come into his own in the recent games. The former NorthEast man has looked sharp of late and opened his goalscoring tally in FC Goa colours with a brilliantly taken goal against Bengaluru FC in a virtual knock-out game.

Redeem looked unfazed in the ISL playoffs a couple of seasons back when he scored a brilliant goal from the edge of the box against Bengaluru. Capable of utilising either of his feet to deliver a telling ball, the 26-year-old is technically astute and will play a big role in FC Goa’s fortunes in the final few games.

#3 Igor Angulo

There has been no slowing the forward down ever since he opened his career in FC Goa colours with a brace in his very first game. A real predator who lives to put the ball into the back of the net, the Spaniard provides the Gaurs with a real edge in the final third.

The experienced forward has made a living on timing his runs to perfection and getting into dangerous areas unmarked thanks to his predatory instincts. The Mumbai backline will have to be on their toes to  thwart his forays towards the Islanders’ goal with the 13 strikes to his name a timely reminder of his capabilities.
