Hyderabad FC vs. FC Goa: 3 Gaurs to watch for

After getting the better of Jamshedpur last Wednesday, FC Goa will look to secure their second three points on the trot on consecutive Wednesdays when they take on Hyderabad at the Tilak Maidan Stadium. The Gaurs have found consistency a bit hard to come by so far this season. A look at their last five games gives a mini-glimpse into their fortunes so far.

Wins against Odisha FC and Kerala Blasters were followed by defeats at the hands to ATK Mohun Bagan and Chennaiyin FC. And thus the come-from-behind win over Jamshedpur was a comeback in more than one way.

And now onto Hyderabad. The men in Black and Yellow have looked a completely different unit from the one that took to the field last season. The team and especially the Indian core has earned rave reviews owing to their penchant for playing with flair.

A side that looks comfortable on the ball, is sure to challenge the Gaurs to the fullest and makes for an enthralling encounter. Then who can turn the tide for the Gaurs? Here are our picks for the game:

#1 Princeton Rebello

Princeton was given another start in FC Goa’s last game against Jamshedpur and we can see before our own eyes the rise of the next Goan midfield general. The youngster looks comfortable on the ball and in his role in the side. After playing a crucial role a couple of seasons back in the Developmental side’s triumph in the Goa Pro League, Princeton is now making the step up.

The game is becoming slower with each passing day for the 21-year-old.  And his induction into the centre of the park gives the Gaurs a new dimension. The youngster’s sense of adventure is accompanied by an assured first touch and a brilliant range of passing.

Within the limited time that he has had this season so far, the youngster has already notched up 7 key passes and possesses a passing accuracy of 85.8%. The game against Hyderabad FC might be time for another Princeton masterclass.

#2 Igor Angulo

Igor Angulo knows how to score goals. Whether it’s a sweet strike off of his favourite left boot, his chest or the back of his head. The Spaniard knows the route to the goal and has proved to be the difference between FC Goa and the other side already on a number of occasions.

The last game Jamshedpur was a prime example. Near absent in the first half, Angulo delivered when it mattered most. The former Gornik man stepped up to the plate to first dispatch a penalty before heading home the eventual winner – this time with the back of his head.

The leader in the race for the ISL Golden Boot will now look to increase the gap at the top when he comes up against Hyderabad.

#3 Jorge Ortiz

It’s hard to overlook the Spaniard, whether you are in the FC Goa corner or the opposing one. The winger’s energy is both infectious and a real torment for the opponents. While Igor Angulo claimed the plaudits for an injury-time winner against Jamshedpur, it was the tenacious work from Ortiz that had brought about the corner.

The Spaniard leads the league currently in dribbles attempted & completed, shots on goal and on target, crosses and ground challenges. The all-combative nature of the 28-year-old adds some real impetus to the proceedings when the Gaurs go charging in and he is always someone you have to keep an eye out for.

It will again be on him to give the Gaurs a real outlet on the wings against Hyderabad. If he is able to get the better of his man during the proceedings, FC Goa is sure to be in for a good night.
