Chennaiyin FC vs. FC Goa: 10 things to know about the game

Thursday’s game against Chennaiyin FC gives FC Goa a formidable chance to the Gaurs to solidify its position at the top of the Indian Super League table. Sergio Lobera’s men have been on a tear of late winning three on the trot to claim a position at the helm of the points table – two clear off their nearest rivals, Bengaluru FC.

Heading into the next game, here are 10 numbers you need to keep in mind:

0 – In 15 encounters between the sides in all competitions, no game has ever ended in a goalless draw. In fact, only 1 of the 15 has ever ended in a stalemate between the two sides.

1 – If FC Goa wins on Thursday, it will be the first time in club history that the Gaurs go on a 4-game winning streak under Sergio Lobera. The only other time Goa have had a 4-game winning streak was back in the inaugural season of the ISL when it beat FC Pune City, Kerala Blasters, and NorthEast United in consecutive home games before winning their fourth game on the trot against Chennaiyin FC away at the Marina Arena.

4 – FC Goa have come out on top on each of the last four occasions the teams have met. The run started when they beat Chennaiyin in their second game of the 2018/19 season 3-1 before doing the double in the last encounter of the league phase which they won 1-0. The Gaurs would again get the better of Chennaiyin in the final of the Super Cup 2-1 before triumphing over the Machans 3-0 in the season-opener in Goa.

5 – FC Goa will be looking for their 5th win at the Marina Arena upon their 7th visit to the stadium. In the previous 6 encounters at the ground, the Gaurs have won 4 of the 5 league games. The only loss in a league game happened in 2016 when Chennaiyin ran out 2-0 winners. The other loss was in the second leg of the semi-final in 2018.

6 – The Gaurs have had a dominant streak of late against Chennaiyin, winning 6 of their last 9 encounters with 1 game ending in a draw.

8 – Brandon Fernandes’ goal against Odisha FC made him the 8th different goal-scorer for FC Goa this season. Coro, Carlos Pena, Manvir Singh, Seiminlen Doungel, Hugo Boumous, Mourtada Fall and Lenny Rodrigues have already been on the scoresheet for the Gaurs this season.

8 – The clean sheet in the last game was the 8th clean sheet kept by the club ever since Sergio Lobera paired Mourtada Fall with Carlos Pena. The duo has kept 8 clean sheets in 16 of the games they have played together in the ISL (excluding playoff games).

9 – At the end of 9 games, FC Goa currently stand with 5 wins. Under Sergio Lobera, in all three seasons the Gaurs have entered the second half of the season with 5 wins in the bag.

16 – Ferran Corominas is back and back with the goals.  After helping the side to wins in the last 2 games, he will try and do it away from home comforts. The Spaniard has scored 16 goals in 21 away games in the ISL (including playoffs).

26 – FC Goa have scored 26 goals in the 15 games they have come up against Chennaiyin FC.
