Ivan Gonzalez: We have to win, even right now

Goa, 25 February, 2022: “It’s not over until it’s over,” Ivan Gonzalez reminded everyone ahead of FC Goa’s upcoming clash with Mumbai City. The Gaurs may be out of the playoffs race already, but the defender feels that the team still have a lot to play for with two league games remaining.

“We have to win, even right now. I do not care whether or not we are in the top-four. Our remaining matches are against Mumbai City and Kerala Blasters who both have chances to qualify. I think that will motivate us as well,” the centre-back said.

“We will play for our pride.”

Earlier this season, FC Goa began their ISL campaign on an underwhelming note, with a defeat against the Islanders. “I think that was the only game this season where we played poorly and the opponents were better than us,” Gonzalez opined.

“Mumbai City is a very good team with good players. Meanwhile, we’re focused on ourselves. We’ll remain competitive, as that is important for a positive result.”

FC Goa were unlucky

The 32-year-old has had a good season so far individually, clocking 1307 minutes across 15 games. Apart from carrying out his primary responsibilities in defence with panache, the Spaniard has also notched a goal and an assist.

The same cannot be spoken of FC Goa. Ivan Gonzalez, however, feels that the Men in Orange were quite unfortunate this season.

“This has been a very difficult season – another bio-bubble, and we began with three losses in a row despite playing well. Shortly afterwards, our then-coach decided to leave for another team. We then worked hard with Coach Derrick (Pereira) and were looking to bounce back, before COVID-19 struck us badly,” he revealed.

“If I were to review our season, I’d say we conceded more goals than we should have and had bad luck in our finishing.”

Thoughts on future

Ivan Gonzalez has been an integral part of the FC Goa setup for the past two seasons. And fans expect him to remain with the club for longer – but the player himself clarified that no decision has been made yet on his future.

“We are professional footballers and we have to play for the team, the fans and ourselves. Here at the club, my contract is expiring in a month, more or less. When the season is over, we’ll see what happens,” the defender signed off.
