Gaurs earn first win of the season in style
FC Goa made a statement of intent with an imperial display to beat defending champions Chennaiyin FC 3-1 here at the Marina Arena. Goals from Edu Bedia, Coro and Mourtada Falls sealed the deal for the Gaurs.
A dominant start to the game saw FC Goa get off to a flier as they took the lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of a brilliant finish from Edu Bedia. The Spaniard marked his return to the side from suspension with a precise finish after Lenny Rodrigues’ good work down the right.
Chennaiyin did get into their rhythm in the latter parts of the first half. They, however, managed to test Mohammad Nawaz only once in the opening forty-five.
The first half ended with four yellow cards flashed and 1-0 lead to FC Goa.
The Gaurs were slow to get going in the second half of the season opener against NorthEast United. Lessons were clearly learnt this time round. The away side wasted no time getting into the thick of things early on.
Their reward? A second for the visitors from the boots of Coro.
The Spaniard got his third of the campaign as a swiftly executed throw-in on the right by Hugo Boumous found Seriton with acres of space. The right-back delivered a brilliant low ball into the middle which found Coro who was again at the right place. The ISL Golden Boot winner from last season duly obliged.
Goa continued to pile up the pressure and the game was put beyond doubt in the 80th minute. Mourtada Fall got on the end of a cross that was flicked on at the near post following a corner. The rest as they say, is history.
Eli Sabia scored for Chennaiyin in time added on. That, however, would only be a late consolation.
FC Goa get back in action on the 24th of October following the international break. The game will be their first home game of the season where they will entertain Mumbai City FC.
