From the misty mountains of Manipur to the serene beaches of Goa, it’s been a long journey for Jackichand Singh. Once Manipur’s next big thing, ‘Jacki’, as he is fondly called, in recent years has become one of the most feared wingers in the country.
Having bagged the Player of The Season award in his debut I-League season in 2014/15, the fleet-footed winger has won over critiques and doubters to become one of the regulars in the Indian national team.
One thing has eluded him so far and he wants to set that straight with his spell at FC Goa.
“I am really hungry at the moment. I am really looking to have a winner’s medal in my cabinet and I feel I have a really good opportunity this year with FC Goa. We have started the season well and we hope to build on it. We really believe in ourselves and hope to go all the way this season,” Jacki stated ahead of the game.
“I get asked a lot of questions as to why I signed for FC Goa. I think this is very easy to answer. Last year when I was with Kerala, I used to watch every Goa game. They were fun to watch. The way the players combined and scored goals by the handful was beautiful. It was really tough to play against them.
“So, this year when Goa came calling, it was a dream situation for me. I get to play under a great coach, with a bunch of brilliant footballers and I also get a crack at winning the Indian Super League. What more can I ask?”
The Delhi trial
Delhi have not won any of their first seven games this season. Jacki, however, is cautiously optimistic heading into the game.
“Past performances count for nothing when you cross the white line. Jamshedpur was a perfect lesson in that for us. We were confident but came up way short of what we are capable of and the result was there for all to see,” added the man from Manipur.
“Delhi will be hungry for their first three points and we have to be at our best if we are to get another win.
“We are confident, and with the fans behind us at Fatorda, we plan to make it three out of three at home.”
The game against Delhi promises to be another goal fest as Sergio Lobera has vowed to be uncompromising in their style. Jackichand Singh has begun his home spell with a bang – bagging two in as many games at Fatorda. The wait now is on to see if he, himself can make it three in three.
