Sergio Lobera stresses on ‘improvement’ following draw against ATK

FC Goa Head Coach Sergio Lobera called for improvements on all fronts in the coming days for the league to move forward. The Gaur played out their first goalless draw under Sergio Lobera here on Wednesday at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata against ATK.

The game saw a combination of missed opportunities from the Gaurs, brilliant saves from Mohammad Nawaz and questionable decisions from the referee to keep it goalless when the final whistle blew.

“When there is a penalty and it is not given, there is nothing much you can do,” stated Lobera following the game. “I respect the referees always and today is the day that on my part that I keep that respect.”

“You will never hear me come into a post-match conference and talk bad about the referees. I have utmost respect for them. However, in the long run if we need the league to improve, we all need to improve; the coaches, the players as well as the referees.”

Speaking at the post match press conference in Kolkata, Sergio Lobera lamented on the missed opportunities before praising Coro despite the Spaniard failing to find the back of the net on the night.

“I think we had really good chances. There was a chance we had with (Mourtada) Fall in the first half and Seriton (Fernandes). Both teams had opportunities to win the game,” added Lobera.

“In terms of Coro, for me, he had a great game. For the fans in the stands it’s easy to say that he didn’t have a good game because he didn’t score. However, for me, as a coach I feel he did a terrific job. Coro worked really hard and helped his team in all ways possible.

“You have to credit ATK for not giving him really big opportunities and coming off with a result they wanted; which was a draw.”

The game finished with Coro still the joint top-scorer in the league with 8 goals from as many games In the 28 games he has played in the ISL over the two seasons, the Spaniard has set the net bulging in 16 of the encounters.

Sergio Lobera and his men move into second spot after the point in Kolkata, ahead of NorthEast United on goal difference. They will next take to the field at the Balewadi in Pune on 11th Decemeber, hoping to do the double over FC Pune City.
